This signed limited edition silkscreen print by Sir Peter Blake was published in 2009 and features the album cover artwork from Manhattan Boogie Woogie, the third and final album by English synthpop band Landscape which was released in 1982.
Blake has placed the style of this album cover art firmly in the in the 1930’s and 40s, a time when the popularity of boogie woogie music was at its height, and which had a aesthetic of its own. In the prominent position of the top left corner, if we read this print as we would a book, Blake shows us Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie, and goes on to heavily reference Matisse. In between these painted heavy-weights we can also pick out giants of screen (Jimmy Stewart) and music (Louis Armstrong), as well as images of the band members of Landscape themselves.
The letters and numbers U2XME1X2MUCH in the centre of the work stand for ‘You two-timed me one time too much’, the title of a Landscape EP that came later. Manhattan Boogie Woogie is a worthy addition to Blake's outstanding portfolio of album cover art prints, and the beautiful editions of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Sweet Child and Stanley Road.
