This limited-edition, archival inkjet print features one of the earliest album covers illustrated by Jim Flora. Gene Krupa and His Orchestra was released on Columbia Records in 1947 on a 78 rpm four-disc set. Krupa (1909-1973) was one of the premiere jazz drummers from the 1930s thru the 1950s -a brilliant player and master showman. He starred with the legendary Benny Goodman Orchestra in the late 1930s, and later fronted his own band featuring trumpeter Roy Eldridge and singer Anita O'Day. He was portrayed by Sal Mineo in the 1959 film The Gene Krupa Story, and in 1979 was the first inductee to the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.
Produced in 2008 by Flora archivist Barbara Economon, the print was meticulously and painstakingly crafted from a mint-condition artist's proof sheet of the Krupa cover in the Flora collection.
It was published by Flora's estate, using a beautiful heavyweight rag paper by Hahnemühle, and we are very excited to be able to offer it for sale here. Each print is numbered in pencil and authenticated with a publisher's seal on the reverse.
