James Marsh is a painter, illustrator, designer and author, best known for his striking album covers for new wave band Talk Talk. Marsh’s art has been the perfect match to Talk Talk’s music ever since his design for their debut album in 1982 and the relationship has resulted in a stunning catalogue of work; a jewel in Marsh’s impressive and distinctive portfolio.
Born in 1946
James Marsh graduated from Batley College of Art and Design in 1965, moving to London to work for Pye Records, then Decca. In 1968 he joined Alan Aldridge to form Ink Studios, collaborating on Alan’s Beatles Illustrated Lyrics publication and Warhol's Chelsea Girls poster.
Since 1976
Having run his own highly acclaimed studio, Head Office, for eight years, he has worked independently, and was recognised by the Independent newspaper in their 'Top Ten Leading British Illustrators'. During his period he was also a founder member of The Association of Illustrators and in the 1980s he published two stunning illustrated books Bizarre Birds and Beasts and From the Heart. It was in 1982 that Marsh created the concept for Talk Talk’s debut album, and he remained the band's artist thereafter.
A Legacy
Marsh's body of work for Talk Talk is the product of a unique and very special relationship: the band have been devoted to their chosen artist throughout their career; the artist is a genuine, lifelong fan of the music.
"I'm proud to be associated with the band in that specific period of our musical history"
It has resulted in an outstanding collection of album covers and ephemera that continues to inspire today.
Still working with the band's legacy, he co-authored the 2012 publication Spirit of Talk Talk.
"Undoubtedly, the creative collaborations with Talk Talk remain my most enduring to date"
In recent years Marsh has designed and published original fonts through his own foundry, Artytype. He continues to evolve as an artist: exhibiting new artworks; self-publishing books, prints & cards; designing album covers for new bands or musicians. His original paintings hang in public and private collections throughout the world and along with his son has recently launched a collection of clothes and homeware, KookyZoo.co.uk.
