This Wishbone Ash album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. New England is the seventh studio album by the British rock band, one that would mark their Americanisation as they relocated from England to the Northeastern United States. The album cover idea came from Peter Christopherson, the third core member of Hipgnosis, whose own sexuality seemed to inform this thoughtful photograph. Storm Thorgerson said that:
Anyone purchasing 5 or more prints from the set will receive their prints in a beautiful archival portfolio, screenprinted exclusively with a Hipgnosis logo designed by Aubrey Powell. |
Signed by: Aubrey Powell Image size: 19.5 x 19.5 inches / Paper size: 26 x 33 inches Edition size: 90 Print type: Archival Inkjet (Giclée)
|
All the artwork published, printed or marketed by Hypergallery is of the highest quality. All artwork is printed on the finest paper stock by renowned and experience printers using traditional or modern techniques. They will either be signed by the artist or embossed with authentication.
In the rare eventuality that an error with publicised price or availability means that we cannot fulfil your order we will let you know as soon as we discover the error and issue an immediate and full refund.
Listed sizes are for approximate guidance only. If you require a precise measurement please get in touch.
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
The very nature of a limited edition print is that it is limited, forever, to the total number detailed in the original edition. If your print is number 70 of 295 then it really is just that: the 70th numbered print in a total edition of 295.
There will also be Artists Proofs (APs) numbering up to a maximum of 10% of the edition, and sometimes Printer’s Proofs (PPs) which are usually kept by the printer, or Hors Commerce prints (HCs) which are used by the publisher for promotional purposes.
Sometimes limited editions are published at different sizes. This is OK, as long as the sizes are distinctly different and they should be published at the same time.
ARTIST/PRINTERS PROOFS
An artist's proof in modern practice is usually used to describe an impression of the finished work that is identical to the numbered copies. There can also be printer's proofs which are taken for the printer to see how the image is printing, or are final impressions the printer is allowed to keep but normally the term "artist's proof" would cover both cases.
Artist's proofs are not included in the count of a limited edition, and they belong to the artist. By convention, the artist is not supposed to sell these at once.
COPYRIGHT
In most cases, if an album cover is a photograph then the photographer will own the copyright. Design work is a little more complicated and depends entirely on the contract drawn up at the time of the creation of the art.
Hypergallery doesn’t own the copyright to any of our prints, but in all cases we ensure that we have the permission of the copyright holder to produce the prints.
ATTRIBUTION
In many cases the creation of an album cover is a collaborative affair. Many album covers designs are attributed to artists who haven’t been directly involved in creating and signing the prints and we aim to make this as transparent and clear as possible in the product details.
ARCHIVAL INKJETS
Archival inkjet printing is also commonly referred to as Giclée. It denotes the high-quality ink-jet printing process which uses fade resistant, archival inks and archival substrates on large format printers to produce fine art prints.
Similarly, the term serigraph has been used to describe artistic use of the silkscreen process.
ARTISTIC ENHANCEMENT
With only a few unavoidable exceptions (when the artist is no longer alive) the prints sold by Hypergallery have been conceived, created, approved and signed by the artist themselves. In many cases the prints look quite different from the original album cover as we give the artist the chance to revisit their original artwork and rework it specifically as a print, without the restrictions of producing it as a mass market album cover.
COST
The value of a print increases as the edition sells out. You may see some prints on sale at a much higher price than others in the same collection and this will usually mean that less of these prints remain available on the primary market. It might also mean that a print has been signed by the musician as well as the artist - for this reason sometimes you may see exactly the same print available at two different prices.
CARING FOR YOUR PRINT
We will wrap your print in acid-free tissue paper and ship it to you in a sturdy cardboard tube. When you take your print out of the tube it is a good idea to let it uncurl overnight on a flat surface before handling it. This will give the paper a chance to lose some of its springiness and make it much easier for you to handle. Remember to wash your hands before handling your print and to take care not to scuff the surface of the image as some of the print surfaces are very delicate.
DISPLAYING YOUR PRINT
We recommend that you frame your print behind conservation quality glass or acrylic (most framers will offer this as standard) and make sure you use archival quality mount board. This way, your print will be free from any materials that might cause it damage.
UK orders will be dispatched by either Royal Mail First Class post, Special Delivery or by courier. Orders to the rest of the world are dispatched by Airmail or by Royal Mail International Tracked and Signed. Royal Mail’s service is a little slower than FedEx and other couriers, but is the only way, at present, for us to guarantee that our prints are actually delivered to a human and signed for. In all cases, a contribution towards the packing and consignment cost will be added to your order and calculated at checkout.
Responsibility for the print lies with us until you receive and sign for it* and for this reason we insist on sending items over £150 by insured, sign-for shipping. All of our print shipments require signature upon delivery so please check the condition of the packaging before accepting it.
*If you have an agreement in place whereby delivery services are to leave parcels without obtaining a signature, as is often the case in the USA, our instruction for them to obtain a signature will be overridden. In these cases responsibility for the print lies with us until it has been recorded as delivered 'as authorised by' your agreement.

This Styx album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. Pieces of Eight is the eighth studio album and second concept album by Styx, released on September 1, 1978. The cover artwork featured an idea that is as rare now as it was then, putting middle aged women (mature glamour as Storm put it) at centre stage. Positioned in an unnatural collage these women seem out of sorts on this strange island, with their souvenir earrings juxtaposed against the majesty of the Easter Island heads. As Aubrey Powell said:

This Scorpions album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. Lovedrive was the sixth studio album by the German heavy metal band, released in 1979. The cover caused some controversy upon the album's release and was subsequently banned, with later pressings of the album bearing a simple design of a blue scorpion on a black background.
This is one of the few Scorpions album covers that was initially edited upon release in many places because of its controversial nature, only to have the original, uncensored art restored for the remaster series. Difficult To Cure

This Rainbow album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. Originally put forward as a cover for Black Sabbath's 1978 album, Never Say Die!, the surgeons are posed in a mock rock'n'roll manner, parodying a similar narcissism which we found faintly ludicrous. Po's friend George Galatzon took the lead role whilst the backup surgeons were played by Peter, Storm, John Blake, Hipgnosis assistant George and his mate. The supporting surgeons are set back slightly from the lead surgeon, an effect achieved by spraying a thin layer of white paint, like a mist, over the entire photo after laying a carefully cut, clear, sticky mask over the image of the lead character so that it would not receive the spray. Richard Manning added hand colouring to enhance the green outfits and the yellow of the gloves. Anyone purchasing 5 or more prints from the set will receive their prints in a beautiful archival portfolio, screenprinted exclusively with a Hipgnosis logo designed by Aubrey Powell. Published in an edition of 90 by hgeditions in 2014 |

Silk Torpedo

This Pretty Things album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. When The Pretty Things announced the title of their album Silk Torpedo, Hipgnosis, who had been commissioned for the cover art, immediately thought of Alberto Vargas, a well-known calendar girl painter much appreciated by the boys fighting abroad in WW2. His paintings were often copied by pilots decorating the fuselage of their jets, for luck, and the Hipgnosis studio paid their own homage with this fantastic sleeve design. Aubrey Powell told Hypergallery:
It is such a fun image, and a beautifully delicate print. Anyone purchasing 5 or more prints from the set will receive their prints in a beautiful archival portfolio, screenprinted exclusively with a Hipgnosis logo designed by Aubrey Powell. |

This Montrose album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. Jump On It saw Montrose at the height of their commercial success and this cover design by Hipgnosis really hit while the iron was hot! The back cover images was of the backside, as it were. Simple but fun. We think that the snappy title in simple typography on striking, saucy (outrageous?) image was echoed in more recent times with The Strokes' release, Is This It.

Drastic Plastic
Regular price $961.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 120): Computation results in '-Infinity'%
This Be-Bop Deluxe album cover design is one of a collection of archival inkjet prints that we released in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives. Drastic Plastic was the last album by Be-Bop Deluxe, released in 1978. The material on the album marked a change in the musical direction of the band, with more synthpop and New Wave sounds alongside some of the progressive and glam standards. Hipgnosis took their cues from the title: 'drastic' as in vividly bright or primary colours and 'plastic' as in acrylic paint and shiny work tops. This was a purpose built set in the studio, like a kitchen area, a real place but geometric, a stylised slice of reality which might echo the music. Anyone purchasing 5 or more prints from the set will receive their prints in a beautiful archival portfolio, screenprinted exclusively with a Hipgnosis logo designed by Aubrey Powell. |

The Original Soundtrack
Regular price $961.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 120): Computation results in '-Infinity'%
This limited edition archival inkjet print is one of a collection of 10cc artworks published by Hypergallery in 2012. The collection, 10 of 10cc, celebrates the wonderful work produced by Hipgnosis and StormStudios for 10cc, from the early days and throughout their career. The cover art for 1975's Original Soundtrack continued in the tradition of eclectic styles and ideas produced for them by Hipgnosis. It is the soundtrack for a film not yet made. Storm remembers thinking that the old Moviola 35mm editing equipment would make an interesting subject for such an album that called for something filmic. Hipgnosis turned to Humphrey Ocean (now an acclaimed Royal Academician but then not long out of art school) to make something more extraordinary of it than a simple photograph. Customers purchasing 5 or more prints from the set will receive their prints in a beautiful archival portfolio with an accompanying booklet signed by Graham Gouldman. |

Hipgnosis proposed their idea of a 2D/3D illusion in response to a request for a sleeve portrait. The photograph was taken in black and white and later hand coloured, to create this rather theatrical illusion!

Deceptive Bends
Regular price $961.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 120): Computation results in '-Infinity'%
This limited edition archival inkjet print is one of a collection of 10cc artworks published by Hypergallery in 2012. The collection, 10 of 10cc, celebrates the wonderful work produced by Hipgnosis and StormStudios for 10cc, from the early days and throughout their career. Deceptive Bends was the fourth album cover designed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell at Hipgnosis and by this time, in 1977, they were firmly established as 10cc's album cover designers. The idea was originally based on a signpost on the road to 10cc's Surrey recording studio 'Beware Deceptive Bends', but Hipgnosis turned this idea on its head with the reference to a diver suffering from the Bends. Is this a hallucination, is this deceptive bends? Aubrey Powell recalled:
Customers purchasing 5 or more prints from the set will receive their prints in a beautiful archival portfolio with an accompanying booklet signed by Graham Gouldman. |

The collection, 10 of 10cc, celebrates the wonderful work produced by Hipgnosis and StormStudios for 10cc, from the early days and throughout their career. The How Dare You inner gatefold photograph was somewhat prescient in depicting a party full of people talking on their phones rather than to each other; something we have probably all experienced to some degree these days. It was also a very clever way of getting the band on the cover without conforming to the usual conventions of band photography.

PRICING
The price of limited edition prints and collectables increases as the edition sells out. We reserve the right to increase the advertised price of the artwork without notice. The price of the artwork will be in force from the date of publication on the website.
VAT is chargeable on all UK sales. Sales to non-UK customers where the delivery is outside the UK will include a full commercial invoice to aid customs clearance on importation to the destination country. Local duties and taxes may be charged at that stage and are payable by the customer. We will endeavour to help predict these costs where possible and help our customers who are not accustomed to dealing with import duties, especially now that this has become necessary in Europe thanks to the UK's departure from the EU.
