Peter Gabriel co-founded the group Genesis in 1966 whilst still at school. They made 7 albums together before Gabriel left in 1975 since which he has made 11 solo albums and soundtrack works that include Birdy (1984), The Last Temptation of Christ (1989) and Rabbit Proof Fence (2002).
In 1980 he conceived and co-founded WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance), principally presenting festivals and providing education on cultures of the world. He has also undertaken a great deal of work for human rights including the coordination of, and participation in Human Rights Now! Tour which took place in 1988 with Amnesty International. 1989, Gabriel co-founded Witness.org which pioneered the adoption of video and on line technologies in human rights and in 2000 he co-founded the Elders.org with Richard Branson, which Nelson Mandela launched in 2007.
Amongst the awards he has received are the Man of Peace award, presented by the Nobel Peace Laureates, and the ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’, various lifetime achievement awards and BT’s digital Music Pioneer Award as well as Grammy awards for his music and video work.
Peter's collaboration with Storm Thorgerson of design group Hypgnosis resulted in the covers for his first three albums, known by fans as 'Car', 'Scratch' and 'Melt'.
