'Sir Bob' was born Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof on 5th October 1951 in DĂșn Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Eire. He started his career as a journalist, firstly in Canada, then in the UK with New Musical Express and Melody Maker.
Back in Ireland he turned to making music rather than writing about it and formed the Nightlife Thugs, which became the Boomtown Rats in 1977. The rest is history but of course what he will be ever famous for is his uncompromising stand against the hypocripsy of the wealthy nations in their attitude to the dreadful famine that was plaguing Ethiopia in 1984.
The recording of 'Do They Know It's Christmas' under the collective of musicians singing for Band Aid and the huge event that was Live Aid made Geldof an international figure. For this dedication he received a knighthood in 1986.
